plant list & notes (updated june 2024)
seasonal tasks!general notes: feeling so satisfied with the layering of scents as you walk through the garden, especially with all the salvias in bloom
pt. 1:
> salvia clevelandii “winifred gilman”
- kind and wonderful- blooming like mad
- pollinators love, I love, we're all in agreement on this
> salvia clevelandii "alpine"
- stunning proud brave and true- move 1 between front roses to south side of garden (DONE! and she's looking all the better for it!)
> Penstemon "margarita BOP"
- the most magical- why are some dying?? (1 on parkway, 1 by north path, others looking decidedly under the weather) Do they not like the current heat??Investigate/mourn
> monardella villas “russian river”
- is plant to left of path getting trampled?? (seems to have sprung back somewhat - I think got trampled by raccoon family.)> lavendula "grosso"
- next season (ie now), dry lavender in basement to preserve (do this!)> iris PCH
- so beautiful, and, almost providentially, the plants with purple flowers and white flowers and yellow flowers sorted themselves out and ended up where each flower color rightfully belongs> achillea millefolium (white, “paprika,” "salmon," "island pink")
- plant more yarrow on parkway- yarrow near north path unhappy -- lack of sunlight? or getting squashed by hose?? (looking better!)
> ceanothus hearstiorum "san simeon"
- growing slowly -- plant more stuff on parkway to compensate (finally growing well - looks established!)> ceanothus "joyce coulter"
- might need to move joyce in north bed (or pull santa barbara daisies to give more breathing room)> salvia microphylla 'hot lips'
- cut back as soon as weather is cool -- getting very woody- did not cut back when should have cut back -- getting a bit out of control
> salvia mellifera (black sage)
- was looking so good -- why are her leaves going so yellow all of a sudden?> eriogonum grande var. rubescens
- the survivors are finally blooming! what a beautiful shade of red.> ribes sanguineum
- looking good> clinopodium chandleri
- get! more!> fragaria chiloensis
- decide which direction(s) to encourage spread> Salvia sonomensis x mellifera Mrs. Beard
- encourage draping over rockery>Muhlenbergia rigens
- deergrass on north side looking less healthy than his brother to the south... due to less water?> armeria maritima
> creeping thyme (orange + ?)
- spreading beautifully+ tulbaghia violacea (society garlic)
- split larger clumped plants when weather is cool and distribute to fill bald patches in rockery+ roses (various)
- all the roses in the neighborhood look vaguely sick. contagion abounds?+ rosemary
+ meyer lemon
- prune when weather is cool+ ornamental pear
+ + + ...
pt. 2:
> achillea millefolium (white, "island pink")
> calystegia macrostegia (coast morning glory)
- add more wire to makeshift trellis for added support!!> lonicera hispidula
- research: better trellising technique- add something to other side of trellis (climbing plant that can handle shade)
> iris PCH
> salvia 'Dara's Choice'
> Ceanothus 'Skylark'
- 1 finally blooming, the other (near plum) looking a little stunted...> ceanothus "ray hartman"
- glossy and looks healthy, but he was supposed to be TALL tall (like, tree tall) -- why has he grown like max a single inch in 1.5 years??> ribes sanguineum
> heuchera maxima
- loves of my life> lawn (clover + yarrow + native grass)
- weed, plant out fescue plugs- add more yarrow, esp. in sunniest areas
